Build a herbal hair routine for your hair type

There's no single “herbal routine” that suits everyone — and that's good news. A handful of pure herbs, matched to what your hair actually needs, beats any all-in-one bottle. Here's how to build yours.

The trick isn't using more herbs; it's using the right ones in the right rhythm. Start by knowing your hair, learn what each herb is good at, then assemble a simple weekly framework you'll actually keep up.

First, know your hair

Most people fall into one of these. Pick the closest — you can always adjust:

The herb toolkit

A quick glossary of what each pure herb is best known for:

Amla — nourishing; leaves hair feeling stronger and looking glossy.
Shikakai — a gentle, low-lather cleanse that doesn't strip.
Reetha (soapnut) — nature's mild cleanser for a soft, residue-free wash.
Bhringraj — traditionally used to help hair look fuller and healthier.
Brahmi — soothing; a classic for a calm, comfortable scalp.
Hibiscus — conditioning; helps hair feel soft and look thick.
Methi (fenugreek) — nourishing; favoured for a dry, flaky-feeling scalp.
Henna & indigo — natural colour that conditions as it works.

Routines by hair type

Dry or frizzy hair

Lead with moisture and go easy on cleansing. Weekly: an amla + hibiscus mask (with a teaspoon of light oil) for softness and shine, then a gentle shikakai rinse. Cleanse less often than you think you need to.

Oily scalp

Cleanse more, mask lightly. Use shikakai with a little reetha twice a week to keep roots fresh, and keep richer masks to the lengths only so the scalp doesn't get weighed down. Brahmi on the off-week helps a scalp that runs warm and oily feel calmer.

Fine or flat hair

Favour herbs known for body over heavy conditioning. A weekly bhringraj + hibiscus mask helps hair look fuller; cleanse with shikakai and skip heavy oils near the roots, which can flatten fine hair.

Coloured or henna'd hair

Protect and nourish around your colour. On colour weeks, follow your henna routine (and indigo if you go darker). On off-weeks, an amla ritual keeps hair glossy — the exact 30-minute amla & shikakai Sunday works perfectly here.

Balanced hair

Keep it simple. A weekly amla + shikakai ritual covers nourish-and-cleanse; rotate in hibiscus or bhringraj when you fancy a change. Add henna whenever you want colour.

A weekly framework

However you mix the herbs, the rhythm is the same three jobs:

Build slowly: introduce one new herb at a time so you can see what your hair responds to — and patch test anything new, as we cover in reading a henna label. A routine you understand beats a routine you copied.

Give it a few weeks

Herbal routines reward consistency, not intensity. The point is a gentle, repeatable habit your hair grows to like over time — not a dramatic one-off. Pick your type, start with two or three herbs, and let the rhythm do the work.

Your hair is specific. Your routine should be too — and with a few pure herbs and a steady weekly rhythm, building one is far simpler than the beauty aisle makes it look.
