How Long to Leave Henna on Hair (and How Long It Lasts)

1 hour for a light tint, 2–3 hours for deep colour — and why overnight doesn't help. Plus how long henna colour really lasts and when to reapply.

How Long to Leave Henna on Hair (and How Long It Lasts)

Leave henna on hair for 1 to 3 hours: about 1 hour for a light tint, 2 to 3 hours for deep colour, and 3 to 4 hours on grey hair. Count from when the rested paste goes on. Beyond 3 to 4 hours the colour gains very little, and overnight adds mess, not depth.

These times assume a paste that has already rested for dye release. With Naturenna Natural Henna, pure single-origin Sojat henna with no PPD, no metallic salts and no synthetic dyes, rest the paste 2 to 4 hours in a warm room, then apply and start the clock. Our guide to how to mix henna covers the paste itself.

How long should henna stay on hair? Times by result

Time on hair What you get Best for
30 to 45 minutes A faint copper glint A gloss or a quick root refresh on dark hair
1 hour A light copper tint Light brown hair, a first test, a gentle colour
1.5 to 2 hours Warm auburn to copper-red Most people, most hair colours
2 to 3 hours Rich reddish-brown, the practical ceiling Dark brown or black hair, deeper colour
3 to 4 hours Fullest copper on greys Grey and white hair, before indigo
Overnight No deeper colour than 3 to 4 hours Not recommended: the paste dries and is hard to rinse

Your starting shade decides how visible the result is. Grey, white and light brown hair show henna clearly; dark brown and black hair show a subtle warmth, so people often choose the longer end of the range. A warm room and a covered head help the colour develop.

How long to leave henna on grey hair

Give grey and white hair 3 to 4 hours. Greys have no pigment of their own and a more resistant surface, so they need the longer end of the range to take the colour evenly. Henna alone will still turn them bright copper. For brown or black coverage, follow the henna with indigo the same day or the next day; timings for each shade are in henna and indigo for grey hair.

What happens in the first hour versus the third

Henna colours hair with lawsone, the natural pigment in the leaf. In the first hour lawsone moves quickly into the outer layer of each strand and you already have a clear tint. In hours two and three the colour builds more slowly, deepening and evening out. After about four hours the strand has taken up what it can, and the paste is mostly drying. The detail is in what lawsone does to hair.

Weak colour after 3 hours? That is almost always a paste problem, not a timing problem: the paste did not rest long enough, or it was too thin. See fixing common henna mistakes.

Does leaving henna on overnight help?

No. Overnight gives no deeper or longer-lasting colour than 3 to 4 hours. The paste dries and cracks, dry henna stops releasing dye, it is harder to rinse, and it can stain pillowcases. For a deeper shade, a second application on another day gives you more control than one very long sitting. If the paste starts drying during a normal session, cover your hair with a shower cap or cling film.

How long does henna colour last on hair?

Henna colour is permanent on the hair it touches. It does not wash out in a few shampoos; it fades gradually and grows out.

When to reapply henna

Most people touch up roots every 4 to 6 weeks, or every 3 to 4 weeks when covering greys. Apply to the new growth only and leave it the same 1 to 3 hours. Re-do the full length only when the lengths look faded.

Quick answers

Is 1 hour enough for henna on hair?

Yes, for a light copper tint. One hour is enough on light brown or grey hair to see colour. For deep colour, or on dark hair, leave it 2 to 3 hours.

Is 2 hours enough for henna on hair?

For most people, yes. Two hours gives a warm auburn to reddish-brown on most hair colours. Grey hair benefits from 3 to 4 hours.

Is 3 or 4 hours too long for henna?

No. Three hours is the practical ceiling for depth on most hair, and 3 to 4 hours suits greys. Past 4 hours there is little extra colour.

How long should henna stay on hair before washing?

Rinse after 1 to 3 hours with plain water only, then wait 24 to 48 hours before using shampoo so the colour can finish oxidising.

How many days does henna stay on hair?

Henna does not wear off in days. It stays on each strand it coloured; you see roots after about 4 to 6 weeks as hair grows.

Does henna get darker after rinsing?

Yes. It deepens over about 48 hours as it oxidises, so bright copper at rinse-out is normal.
