How to Make Mehndi Paste for Hands at Home

To make mehndi paste for hands at home, mix 50 g of fine, pure henna powder with about 100 ml of lemon juice or strained black tea and a teaspoon of sugar until it is as thick as yoghurt, then cover it and let it rest for 6–12 hours so the dye releases. Fill a cone, apply, leave the paste on for 4–6 hours, scrape it off without water, and the stain will darken from orange to reddish-brown over the next 48 hours.

This recipe makes about two medium cones — enough for both hands with a simple or fairly detailed design. It uses Naturenna Natural Henna: pure henna leaf powder from Sojat, Rajasthan, with no PPD, no metallic salts and no synthetic dyes, and a batch number on every pack.

Mehndi paste recipe at a glance

Ingredient 1 hand (small design) 2 hands (standard) Bridal or 4+ hands
Henna powder 25 g (2 heaped tbsp) 50 g (4 heaped tbsp) 100 g
Lemon juice or strained black tea 45–55 ml 90–110 ml 180–220 ml
Sugar ½ tsp 1 tsp 2 tsp
Coconut or other neutral oil (optional) ½ tsp 1 tsp 2 tsp
Cones it fills 1 2 4–5

You also need a non-metallic bowl, a wooden or plastic spoon, a fine sieve, cling film, and ready-made cones or food-grade plastic sheet to roll your own. Some people add a few drops of essential oil for fragrance; it is optional, so patch test first or leave it out.

How long does each stage take?

Stage Time What to look for
Resting the paste (warm room, 25–30 °C) 6–8 hours Dark brown layer on top; orange mark on a wrist test within minutes
Resting the paste (cool room or winter) 10–12 hours Same wrist test — give it more time if there is no mark
Paste on the skin 4–6 hours (overnight if wrapped) Paste dries and cracks; keep it moist with lemon-sugar
No water after scraping First 12 hours Stain starts bright orange
Colour fully developed About 48 hours Reddish-brown to deep maroon on palms
How long it lasts 1–2 weeks on palms and fingers Fades as the skin renews; washing and hot water speed it up

How to mix mehndi paste step by step

1
Sift. Pass the henna through a fine sieve into the bowl. Naturenna Natural Henna is triple-sifted; one more pass through a tea strainer or muslin catches any lumps formed in storage.
2
Add the liquid slowly. Pour in about three-quarters of the lemon juice or tea, stir, then add the sugar and oil.
3
Get the texture right. Aim for thick yoghurt that holds a soft peak. Add the remaining liquid a spoonful at a time.
4
Beat for two minutes. This removes lumps and makes the paste smooth and glossy, so it flows evenly from the cone.
5
Cover and rest. Press cling film onto the surface of the paste and leave it somewhere warm, out of direct sun, for 6–12 hours.
6
Test the dye. Dab a little on the inside of your wrist. An orange mark within a few minutes means the paste is ready.

If the paste has stiffened before you use it, loosen it with a few drops of lemon juice. The same mixing principles for hair are covered in how to mix henna for hair.

Which henna powder works best for hands?

Fresh, finely milled leaf powder with nothing added. Old or coarse powder gives a weaker stain and can block the cone tip mid-design. The pack should say pure henna leaf with no PPD, no metallic salts and no synthetic dyes — our guide on how to read a henna label goes through it line by line. Palms have thick skin and need plenty of dye to take colour; henna from Sojat in Rajasthan, which holds a GI tag as Sojat Mehndi, is known for its naturally rich dye content. The background is in why Sojat is known for henna.

"Instant" or "black" mehndi cones that stain within minutes usually contain PPD or other synthetic dyes, not pure henna. Pure henna never stains black — it always starts orange and darkens over 48 hours.

How to fill a mehndi cone at home

  1. Cut a 20 × 20 cm square of food-grade plastic sheet and roll it into a tight cone with a sharp point.
  2. Tape the seam so it cannot unroll.
  3. Spoon in paste until the cone is about two-thirds full; an overfilled cone is hard to squeeze.
  4. Fold the open end over twice and tape it down.
  5. Snip a very small piece off the tip — you can always cut more.
  6. Draw a few practice lines on paper before you start on your hand.

Store filled cones you are not using in the fridge for up to a week, or in the freezer for longer, and let them come back to room temperature before applying.

How to get a darker mehndi stain

For a festival or wedding, apply one to two days before the day itself so the stain is at its deepest when it matters. If something went wrong, fixing common henna mistakes covers the usual causes.

Quick answers

How do you make mehndi paste for hands at home?

Sift 50 g of fine henna powder, mix it with about 100 ml of lemon juice or strained tea and a teaspoon of sugar to a thick paste, rest it 6–12 hours, then fill a cone and apply.

How long should mehndi paste rest before applying?

6–8 hours in a warm room and 10–12 hours in a cool one. It is ready when a dab on the wrist leaves an orange mark within a few minutes.

How long should I keep mehndi on my hands?

4–6 hours, or overnight if you can keep it wrapped. Scrape it off instead of washing it.

Mehndi kitni der tak lagana chahiye?

Haathon par mehndi 4–6 ghante rakhein. Phir paani ke bina khurach kar hatayein aur 12 ghante tak haath geele na karein — rang 48 ghante mein gehra hota hai.

Why is my mehndi stain light?

Usually old powder, paste that was not rested long enough, washing too soon, or judging the colour before the 48-hour mark.

Can I use the same henna for hands and hair?

Yes. Pure henna leaf powder works for both; only the paste consistency and the time on hair or skin differ.
