Pure henna gives copper, herbal henna a warm brown, and henna plus indigo gives dark brown to black and covers grey. A chart to pick the right one.

Choose by the colour you want. Pure henna gives copper to reddish-brown. Herbal henna gives a warm brown with a conditioned feel. For dark brown, natural black or grey coverage you need henna followed by indigo, which is what a henna + indigo combo packs. Indigo is never used alone on bare or grey hair.
| You want | Use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Copper, auburn or red tones | Natural Henna | Bright copper at rinse-out, settling to reddish-brown in 48 hours |
| Warm natural brown, soft feel | Herbal Henna | Warm brown to reddish-brown; herbs add a conditioned feel |
| Dark brown | Henna, then Natural Indigo for about 1 hour | Brown that deepens over 48 hours |
| Natural black | Henna, then indigo for 1.5 to 2 hours, repeated | Deep brown-black that builds over 2 to 3 applications |
| Grey or white coverage | A henna + indigo combo | Even brown to black after 2 to 3 rounds |
| Mehndi on hands | Natural Henna only | Orange stain that darkens to reddish-brown in 48 hours |
Natural Henna is one ingredient: 100% henna leaf (Lawsonia inermis) from Sojat. It gives the strongest colour and is the only one to use for mehndi on skin or for beards. Herbal Henna is henna blended with amla, reetha, shikakai, bhringraj and hibiscus. The herbs soften the red towards a warmer brown and leave hair feeling soft, so it suits people who want colour and a hair pack in one step. Herbal Henna is for hair only.
Henna alone can never give brown-black or black. Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) adds a cool blue tone that sits over the warm henna base and turns it brown or black. Indigo needs that henna base: on its own it can look patchy or blue-green on grey hair. Use the two-step method: henna first, rinse, then indigo the same day or the next.
Both combos pack henna and indigo separately for the two-step method. Pick the Natural Henna + Indigo Combo for the strongest base and the most even coverage. Pick the Herbal Henna + Indigo Combo if you also want the hair-care herbs. Greys take colour slowly, so plan on two or three applications; timings by shade are in henna and indigo for grey hair.
| Hair length | Henna per application | Indigo per application |
|---|---|---|
| Short | About 100 g | About 100 g |
| Shoulder length | 150–200 g | 150–200 g |
| Mid-back | 250–300 g | 250–300 g |
| Roots only | About half | About half |
For grey coverage, buy enough for two or three full applications at the start, then roots every 3 to 4 weeks. The Value combo kit (200 g + 200 g) suits shoulder-length hair for one full two-step application.
The full checklist is in how to read a henna label.
For brown to black grey coverage, use henna followed by indigo, for example a henna + indigo combo. Henna alone turns grey hair copper-orange.
Neither is better; they do different jobs. Natural Henna gives the strongest colour and works for mehndi. Herbal Henna gives a softer warm brown with hair-care herbs, for hair only.
Not on grey or light hair. Indigo needs a henna base to hold and to read as brown or black instead of blue-green.
Mixed in one paste gives brown. For black or stubborn greys, the two-step method (henna first, indigo second) gives a deeper, more even result.
Single-origin Sojat henna and pure indigo, packed separately for the two-step method. No PPD, no metallic salts.
